The District #4 Elementary School “Young at Art” exhibit reception was on Wednesday, January 17th. The Addison Center for the Arts Gallery opened their doors to an estimated 150 students, parents, teachers and administrators. The student’s artwork is absolutely covering the walls — floor to ceiling. The “Young at Art” exhibit is a compilation of artwork from eight different elementary schools in Addison. Each school selected approximately 25 works from students K-8, highlighting their talents and techniques learned throughout the year. The art curriculum in Addison is based on national standards, combining history, technique and imagination into their studies. A special thank you to the elementary and junior high art teachers in Addison for promoting and encouraging the creativity shown in the artwork. If you want to hear a little more about the exhibit, be sure to watch the segment on Addison Community Television, Arts in Addison featuring Sue Bortko, ACA board member, Arts in Education chair and retired Dist #4 Art Educator. The Addison Art Guild Fall Members’ Show was on display November 6 – December 9, 2017. As promised, it was a show not to be missed. The show will consisted of artwork from members representing a wide range of art mediums – oils, pastels, acrylics, colored pencil, graphite, photography, mixed media, water color and sculpture. “Our members have been hard at work getting ready for this show. Each year the art work gets better,” commented AAG President, Margaret Bucholz. The Artist Reception was held on Thursday, November 9 from 7:00 – 8:30pm. It was juried by abstract artist Penélope Osio-Brown. The Addison Artist Guild will have its next meeting on January 11, 2018 which will include member's critique. If you would like to hear more about the Guild, check out the ACTV interview from the week of the show opening. Here are some pictures of the reception taken by guild member Greg Maksymiw. Wes Baker was in the gallery this October 4-28th. His traveling exhibit “American Images” featured a diverse collection of abstract representational iconic works of motorcycles, landscapes and Native American themes, exploring current and historical issues. Baker is a vivid story teller on and off the canvas. “The passion in these paintings is personal. I strive to communicate experiences of life – joy, freedom, fear, grief,” explains the artist.
Visit Wes' website to learn more about his work and future exhibits. You can also view the ACTV "Arts in Addison" segment on YouTube to hear his inspiration and story. Benjamin F. Calvert III exhibited his show “Gathering Grains and Grooves” August 23 - September 23 with an artist reception Friday, September 8th.
Ben is a printmaker with a passion for nature and the interpretation of what is familiar. His art is created by carving images into wood, inking the wood, burnishing paper by hand onto the inked block, then pulling up the paper to reveal the print. Ben states “pulling that first print off the block is pure joy. The excitement multiplies when there are multiple blocks for each color involved. Each successive color is a layer that informs the mystery and appeal of the final image.” He also offered a mini workshop during his exhibit and teaches printmaking regularly at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Visit Ben’s webpage, www.benjamincalvert.com to learn more about his work and future exhibits. You can also view the ACTV "Arts in Addison" segment on YouTube featuring Ben Calvert and his process which was aired Labor Day weekend. Benjamin F Calvert III generously shared his craft as a workshop at the Gallery. He coached the students through the steps of carving, inking, burnishing and pulling a print. We are happy to report there was no blood shed, but only happy faces when they pulled their very own print. The Addison Center for the Arts concluded another Free Concerts in the Park series with an outstanding lineup of music of all genres Tuesday evenings from July 11 to August 15. The weather was beautiful, so we never had to hold our concerts indoors in the Rotunda because of rain. Thank you to all the musical groups — Lake Effect, Reunion Jazz Orchestra, Felix Fahm, Melodeers, Limited Edition Big Band and Transformation. Let us know what you like to hear. Suggestions are welcome. Contact the Addison Center for the Arts office 630-458-4500 or send an email to with the subject line : Concerts. We are looking forward to another great concert season next year. Thank you for everyone that shopped, volunteered and contributed to the 2nd Annual Starving Artist sale Wed. Aug. 2nd - Sat.
